A Musical Genius: Johann Sebastian Bach

When it comes to music, few names shine as brightly as Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany, Bach went on to become one of history's most influential composers. His talent, dedication, and perseverance established him as a musical genius of unparalleled magnitude.
Early Life and Family
Bach hailed from a family deeply embedded in music. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, worked as a town musician, and his uncle, Johann Christoph Bach, was a renowned composer. Growing up surrounded by music, young Johann Sebastian Bach displayed exceptional talent from an early age.
Orphaned at the age of ten, Bach moved in with his older brother, Johann Christoph, who continued to nurture his musical education. Under his brother's guidance, Bach became proficient in playing the violin and organ, further honing his skills as a composer.

After Maria Barbara's death, Bach married Anna Magdalena, a gifted singer who would later become a significant musical collaborator. The couple had thirteen children, of whom only six lived past infancy.

He overcame adversity, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to inspire and move audiences across the globe. Originally published in 1879 as a portion of the author’s larger “The Great German Composers,” this Kindle edition, equivalent in length to a physical book of approximately 20 pages, describes, in clear, simple language, the life and work of German baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
Sample passage:
“Although on this occasion we only invited you as a spectator, Master Bach,” the King addressed him, “we distinctly reserve to ourselves the privilege of trying and admiring your proficiency in a contest with M. Marchand. In the meantime we should be greatly pleased if you would give us a small specimen now, if it be only by way of trying the instrument.”
With a low reverence to the King, Bach went up to the harpsichord, put Marchand’s music aside and began. It was with intense astonishment that Marchand watched Bach, of whom he had never heard before, as he so courageously took his seat. After a magnificent prelude, Bach played the theme which Marchand had chosen, and then improvised twelve additional variations in so original and varied a style, that the King, with all his predilection for everything French, and especially for Marchand, loudly expressed his admiration.
The proposed contest of the two artists was to take place at the house of Count Flemming, Marchand’s special protector. The King having fixed the day and hour, and Volumier having notified it to Bach, the latter sent the usual challenge to Marchand, couched in the most polite terms, in which he asked his fellow artist to favor him with any musical themes he may select, to be executed extempore, provided that his opponent would do the same. Marchand accepted, and pledged himself to appear at the appointed hour.
