Extract: "On 20 February 1909, in an act of pure bravado typical of a man who liked to call himself “the caffeine of Europe”, the Italian poet Filippo Marinetti published the manifesto of Futurism on the front page of the French newspaper Le Figaro. Futurism had no other members, no detailed aesthetic vision, and was almost unheard of even in Italy, but the publication of the manifesto in this way, in Paris, the art capital of Europe, made it clear that this was intended to be an announcement of international importance."
This piece by James Longford explains the theoretical and historical background to Italian Futurism, describes and analyses some of its key works, and discusses its wider influence. It is written to academic standards with footnotes and a bibliography.
